Crime, war and spy novels are chosen by 20% of young people, while comics account for 15%. Only 10% prefer belles-lettres.
It is interesting that fantasy books are three times as popular as belles-lettres. They are also twice as popular as comics. Perhaps teenagers like fantasy because such books help them escape from everyday problems and enter an imaginary world. At the same time, the relatively low popularity of belles-lettres may be connected with their difficult language and serious topics.
In my opinion, one of the main problems connected with reading is the lack of free time. In addition, many teenagers prefer social networks, computer games and videos. To solve this problem, schools and parents could organize reading clubs and recommend modern books that correspond to young people’s interests. It would also be useful to arrange a special reading hour every week.
To sum up, the survey shows that teenagers in Zetland do read, although their preferences are different. I believe that reading is very important because it develops imagination, enlarges vocabulary and teaches young people to think independently. Therefore, teenagers should read regularly.
