Jack

Jack met three guys from school in London, and they had fun together before they all went back to real life again. Two of them were going to law schools, and one was getting married soon. As for Jack, he was turned down at the schools he 30 ______ to, because he didn’t have a master’s yet. So he was going to 31 ______ courses at London University. All the prep schools had told him to come back again in a year, when he had his degree. But it still seemed a lifetime away, and he wasn’t 32 ______ in the general courses he’d signed up for at London University.

He felt like the only one 33 ______ at home, and in desperation he took a job at Tracy’s in the Christmas rush, and didn’t even mind when they assigned him to the men’s department and had him selling shoes. It was one of those large elegant department stores that smelled good and where all the people were well dressed. Tracy’s had once been a store which set the styles for everyone, and to some extent it still did, 35 ______ there appeared a new luxury store Paradise only three blocks away. Jack was fascinated by that, and he 36 ______ telling the store manager what he thought they could do to compete with the new store, and the manager only smiled. Tracy’s didn’t compete with anyone. But Peter Clinton, the head of the store, was intrigued when he read a memo from Jack. He liked Jack’s ideas a great deal.
