Sample answer for task 38.1: Preparing for New Year celebrations in advance is important for many people in Zetland. I have found some interesting data on the activities they consider the most important.

According to the table, 36% of the respondents prefer to tidy the house before the holiday. Almost the same number of people, 34%, choose to decorate a New Year tree. Cooking traditional New Year dishes is important for 20% of those surveyed. Much fewer respondents are interested in buying presents for friends and relatives, with only 7% choosing this activity. The least popular option is buying a new outfit, mentioned by just 3% of the respondents.

It is noticeable that tidying the house is only 2 percentage points more popular than decorating the tree. At the same time, cleaning is chosen by 12 percentage points more people than cooking traditional dishes and by 33 percentage points more than buying a new outfit. This may mean that Zetlanders associate a successful celebration mostly with a pleasant and comfortable home atmosphere.

However, organising a New Year party can be difficult because people may not have enough time to do everything. A good solution is to make a detailed schedule and divide the duties among family members.

In my opinion, preparing well in advance is essential. It helps people avoid stress, manage their time and enjoy the holiday with their relatives and friends.

38.1 Imagine that you are doing a project on the preparations for the New Year that Zetlanders consider most important. Comment on the data in the table and give your opinion on the subject of the project. Follow the plan: make an opening statement; select and report 2–3 facts; make 1–2 comparisons and give your comments; outline a problem that can arise with organizing a New Year party and suggest a solution; conclude by giving and explaining your opinion on the importance of preparing for New Year celebrations well in advance.

38.2 Imagine that you are doing a project on what topics discussed on social networks interest Zetland teenagers most of all. Comment on the data in the pie chart and give your opinion on the subject of the project. Follow the plan: make an opening statement; select and report 2–3 facts; make 1–2 comparisons and give your comments; outline a problem that one can face with social networks and suggest a solution; conclude by giving and explaining your opinion on the quality of content one can find on the Internet.

The pie chart shows the following results: Music — 35%, Films — 25%, Celebrities — 22%, Sport — 10%, Love and friendship — 8%.
